Penny, I want you to know how much of a difference your hypnosis/weight loss program has transformed my life. In the past month, I have lost 20 pounds, putting myself below 200 lbs. for the first time in 30 years. When I look at myself in the mirror I no longer look at myself as a failure, but as a beautiful person who is making very positive choices and loving herself for maybe the first time in her life. I no longer hate to exercise. I exercise every day. I am amazed at the positive meal choices that I now make. I don't drink diet drinks, bread, pasta, or candy, and I don't want to. LOL I'm so amazed at that!!!! Thank you Penny, Beverly B.

I want to thank you for what you have done for me. My wife came to see you back in June and I have watched the weight melt away steadily. The results you were able to provide for her have been the motivation and inspiration for me to do this.

It has been four weeks since I began and I am very pleased with the results so far. I started Thanksgiving week, by the next session the following week I had lost weight, over Thanksgiving weekend, that's just amazing!

At no time since beginning have I felt like I'm on a diet. I eat whatever I want; I just don't eat as much. What used to be a single meal in a restaurant has now become that meal and lunch the next day. I have no desire for sweets and my one real weakness, ice cream, has not been a problem.

It's been almost four weeks, and I've lost 8 lbs, I can already feel in in my clothes and some people have noticed a difference. I am wearing pants that I haven't been able to wear for months; for a change I'm taking my belt in an extra notch instead of letting it out. All of this has happened during one of the worst times of the year for weight control. We have had at least 2 Christmas parties every week for the last 3 weeks, and I have still gotten these results. I really do think that the next few months are going to be very good for me and the changes that I'm making with your help will be for a long, long time. Thank you. Kevin D.

25 days smoke free. Easier than I expected. So, I am pleasantly surprised at the result and want to thank you. Fifty-seven years without one day without a cigarette when it was up to me. Going up north for the holidays to shock my family.

Again, Thank you, Joe D.

"Dear Penny, I just wanted to thank you for all the help you have been to me. The weight loss hypnotism is wonderful! I am losing weight and feeling much better about myself. It is great to be in control of your eating habits. I have seen a great improvement! I know that these changes are for life and very good for me. I will tell anyone I know that is having any problems with their weight about my excellent experience with weight loss hypnotism! Thanks " Joretta W. !

"Just a few thoughts on the hypnosis I have received from you the last few weeks. WOW! WOW! It has become second nature to eat slowly, putting down the fork after each bite and not always thinking about food. I can see now I am heading for a new way of life. With that new way comes losing pounds slowly and forever. Thank you for giving me back my life. I can see now I am going to enjoy more things and be able to do more things." Nancy D.

"I found Penny to be an excellent hypnotist. Penny listened to my concerns and addressed them during our sessions. I was delightfully relaxed during our sessions, had full confidence in Penny's ability and professionalism. I have had a lifelong affair with pastries, and now no longer crave them. What a wonderful accomplishment! Finally-freedom from these cravings and the disastrous results of overindulgence." S. S.

Well this is a pleasant surprise! And I am not smoking. Not even one drag since I saw you in May, Thank you. Christine V.

Using the mind to heal

In the last decade people have been turning to noninvasive remedies such as hypnosis for everything from pain management to addiction.

Penny Hanson, master hypnotist, gets ready to put glasses on a client in her Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., office. They have blinking red lights in them. The glasses and headphones are intended to relax the client.

Ten pounds - that's all Linda Rodriguez wanted to lose. She'd had some success before: Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, South Beach. But she couldn't keep it off. So last week, the 56-year-old gave hypnosis a shot. And she insists she can already tell a difference.

"I went to dinner afterwards, and I couldn't believe it," Rodriguez says. "I'm someone who loves to eat. But I found myself eating very slowly, enjoying each bite. I filled up, and I couldn't finish it all. I felt the same way during breakfast the next morning." For hypnotist Penny Hanson, consciousness-altering techniques just might be the right fix. Hanson says a little positive suggestion in a plush recliner can go a long way. "It's all about setting aside the critical factor - the guard between what goes on between the conscious and the subconscious mind," says Hanson, who employs headphones, soft music, and dark, flashing eyeglasses to expedite her weight loss and smoking addiction programs. "What I'd like to do is teach people how they can get around that themselves."

Hanson speaks to the client via a microphone. As a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists in Merrimack, N.H., Hanson belongs to one of the fastest-growing, non-licensed professions in America. NGH spokesperson Martha DuBois says the guild, which has been certifying hypnotists since 1951, counts 6,700 members worldwide, or triple the number it had when she joined 12 years ago.

Hypnotism has come a long way since its Jazz Age stage shows and the 19th-century "Evil Eye" stereotypes perpetuated by novelist George du Maurier's manipulative Svengali. The argument behind hypnotism - that negative habits can be modified through the power of repetitive suggestion - is far less melodramatic than the Hollywood portrayals. It was embraced as an acceptable clinical procedure by the American Medical Association in 1958 and recommended for inclusion in medical school curricula.

But it wasn't until the last decade, when patients began investigating noninvasive remedies for everything from pain management to addiction, that the field began to take off. A 1998 Journal of the American Medical Association report indicated hypnotism's use increased by 33 percent from 1990 to 1997. Scott Lilienfeld, an associate professor of psychology at Emory University in Atlanta and editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practices, is mildly skeptical of hypnotism's remedial powers "because there's no evidence that hypnosis is a physiologically distinct state different from the relaxed brain." He's also "disturbed by the proliferation of people using hypnosis for a number of psychological problems" and recommends it only "when combined with other procedures that have been proven effective." But Dr. Kathy Doner left her Sebastian, Fla., practice in internal medicine after 21 years to go full-time into hypnosis. "Physicians want to help people, and they get frustrated when their patients stay in chronic pain, especially when that pain is related in some way to things patients can control, like smoking and weight," Doner says. "There are some things, like phobias, that you definitely want to take to your primary care physician first. "But hypnosis is really just the power of the mind. You can change your emotions and your stress levels. You can slow down bleeding, you can slow down a burn on your skin, you can alter your pain levels. I've seen it happen."

Hanson says the key is a controlled environment. Following a consultation on the client's goals, she invites a visitor to relax in an easy chair and adjusts headphones to eliminate the distraction of ambient noise. She speaks over taped music, sometimes tweaking her voice through a slight echo-chamber modulation. She also tells her clients to close their eyes as she hooks them up with a pair of InnerQuest glasses - fitted with blinking lights, whose frequencies she can adjust. "It helps them reach a deep level of relaxation," she says.

Hanson says visualization and positive reinforcement are key elements in her sessions, which last up to 45 minutes. "You don't say things like, 'You don't like candy and sweets' because your mind hears, 'You like candy and sweets.' You say, 'You enjoy healthy foods, you drink water every day between meals,' things like that. You always accent the positives."

Hanson's Harbour Beach, Fla., practice includes a weight-control program that goes three sessions for $399; a stop-smoking program requires a single visit for $299. Clients receive their recorded session on compact disc for maintenance purposes.
